Business Engagement Task Force is changing it's name to
2ht: hire tech | higher tech
The hire tech | higher tech (2ht) is a volunteer run program at OTI to help the unemployed and underemployed professionals in the National Capital region. We are looking for volunteers to join the program. Benefits of joining can be as little as ‘having something to do’ or as rewarding as ‘finding your dream job’.
Main goals for 2ht can be summed up as:
Help local employers fill their vacant positions
Help volunteers and OTI members find gainful employment
Providing training to volunteers on how to contact, interact and help local employers
Help job seekers understand the changing employment landscape
Find out what skill-set is desired by employers to ensure long term employability
What is 2ht? We are not a headhunter or a placement agency or a recruiter. We are a non-profit organization that helps the unemployed and under-employed professionals in the National Capital region. Our volunteers are all professionals with extensive experience and education in their specialties. Since their specialty is not looking for a job (but rather developing products/services, etc) we help them adjust to the new economy where they need to network, use a variety of tools for their job searches and most importantly keep their skill up-to-date. We provide the necessary training for contacting companies and helping themselves and others in the community.
How does it work? Once you identify companies of interest to you, you are paired with one other 2ht member. Upon arranging a visit to the employer, you and your team visit the business to obtain information and find out about potential skills requirements.
The time commitment is dependent on your interest level. However given past experiences, we know that the more you can commit the sooner you are likely to be employed.
How do we find jobs? We do not find jobs for you. You do. We provide the basic training and methodology for you to utilize and help yourself. Instead of applying on-line (which you should still do as part of diversifying your search methodologies) we show you how to contact the employer.
Who are we looking for? We are looking for volunteers regardless of their professions (from all walks of life) to join the 2ht. We provide 2.5 days of training. Through this training, you will learn how to contact employers, how to provide a valuable service to the hiring manager and most importantly network with other professionals in your area of expertise/interest.
What do I get in return? If history is any indication you get multiple benefits by joining the task force. To start with, you get training on how to contact employers, network with hiring managers, HR professionals, and your peers. You also get an understanding of what skill-sets are desirable and can decide for yourself if you want to upgrade your skill-set. But the best reward is the job offer you get as a result of your interaction with the employers you have targeted…
How do I join? First you need to become a member of OTI. This is as simple as sending an email to info@otiac.ca with your intention and a recent resume. We have orientation sessions every Wednesday 10:00 am where we talk about the 2ht and answer any questions you may have.
Once you become part of the 2ht, there is an initial training scheduled to last 2.5 days. We have these sessions starting every two weeks. As with other programs offered by OTI, this training is free of charge to all participants.
Once you complete the training course you will need to identify companies of interest to you and start making contacts at those companies as demonstrated during the training course.
What if I cannot join now? If you are employed and/or cannot attend the training session and/or do not have the time to join the 2ht, you can still be considered for job leads generated through the 2ht. All you need to do is become a member of OTI and send us an up-to-date resume. Upon searching our database we may be calling you for possible openings in area companies.
Important dates to note: Orientation session: Every Wednesday at 10:00 am at 359 Terry Fox Drive Suite 210, in Kanata North (March Road and Terry Fox Area). Training session: Every two weeks. Please contact us to register for the next available one.
